To prevent theft of personal and payment data during transaction transmission, data is encrypted at the time a card is swiped or inserted into a chip reader. After processing, the data is sent through a tokenization engine (which essentially changes the transaction data into an unreadable, coded representation of itself) and is sent back to the merchant system for storage and reference. Only the token resides in merchant systems. Since the token cannot be reversed engineered into usable data, using it reduces internal security threats and lessens the burden of PCI compliance.
